The division of powers and the Canadian constitution are very clear. How does Ignatieff bypass the provinces and dictate the new powers to himself? Provinces are very protective of their jurisdiction and have learned from the previous Liberal administration when funding is cut they are on the hook for the program.

Liberals under the Chretien-Martin regime actually gutted over twenty-five billion in Education, Health and Social Services. Do Federal Liberals like Ignatieff really believe the provincial governments will believe them?

Buy-in: Several provinces do NOT have the fiscal capacity to match funds, many in the left wanted the federal government to spend one hundred per cent of the stimulus. Ignatieff's talking points will require a stable, significant long term financial comittment from the Federal government in order to build these schools instead of prisons. The Liberal opposition spent months decrying the Economic Action Plan during the recession as ineffective, they required Report Cards only. They have repeatedly pointed to the large federal deficit without making any effort in providing an alternative in this minority parliament. They refuse to show up for hard work and vote against this government's agenda in parliament since losing power in 2006. How can you trust the Federal Liberals after the $ 56 billion taken from the E.I. fund in being progressive and compassionate?

In a few days over ten thousand people will be visiting Canada. The costs of a Travel Pavillion to help promote Ontario has a man made lake with a cost of $ 57,000.

“We’re trying to make a memorable impression,” said Michael Lawley of Muskoka Tourism. “Is it expensive? Well, that’s the cost of doing business.”

In Question Period the Liberals have joined the other parties complaining about the supply bill, they are so unhappy they will make sure enough of them stay away so it passes. The Liberals believe they are acting responsibly by attacking the omnibus bill and undermining the government.

The 2010 budget bill sailed through the House of Commons by a vote of 138-126 on Tuesday, with 30 Liberal MPs absent to ensure the budget survived — along with the government.

The speech writers have adopted a new word in all their questions. Peter 'crying wolf' fable has no meaning for the Liberals. They have effectively eliminated any credibility over repeated games and stunts.

The majority of Canadians have given the leader the worst rating in leadership and the party is polling below thirty per cent. Instead of getting behind the Government of Canada and promoting Ontario the opposition are continuing to demostrate the need of adult supervision.

During the Olympics, many provincial governments bought advertising promoting their province to the world. The opposition have again put political games ahead of being Canadian during the Olympics and now with the G7-G20.

Will these morons attack the Premier of Ontario Dalton McGuinty for working with the Federal Government in the promotion of providing a glimpse of cottage country for the 1,800 of reporters that are not travelling to Deerhurst?

This lady is no shrinking violet. I applaud her efforts trying to getting the politicians, lobbyists to drop the abortion football wedge. Conservative Senator Nancy Ruth also got our attention awhile back on gender changes to the National Anthem.I did not agree with her opinion on changing the anthem, but her voice on this ending the games makes sense.

Ontario Senator Ruth, who is unique in the Tory caucus in that she is a strong feminist who is also gay, has a column about the proposal that will appear in Monday’s Hill Times. Liberal Senator Vivienne Poy once had a similar private member’s bill asking Parliament to replace the words “in all our sons command” with “in all of us command.” The original Old English wording was the awkward, “True patriot love thou dost in us command.”

While no one is objecting to the idea, Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff told reporters the government should be taking more substantive action on women’s issues.- The Hill Times March 4, 2010

In my opinion a private members Bill introduced by two Liberals Bill C-302 Italian-Canadian Recognition and Restitution Act is just another example of the weakness of the Liberal party. Is this pandering to ethnic vote a desperation to save their seats because they believe they can't win in 2010? The  Liberals waited until the dying days of the Martin led-Liberals to offer $ 12.5 million regarding Italian-Canadian Recognition. They did the same with the Kelowna Accord and National Daycare.

Why did it take seven Liberal Prime Ministers to bring this matter forward?

For almost 30 years the issue was forgotten but it resurfaced in the 1970s when some Italian Canadian community leaders started talking about an apology and financial compensation. But prime minister Pierre Trudeau, another Liberal, said the issue was closed. He told the House Commons that he didn't believe "in attempting to rewrite history in this way."

At that point, while they were in opposition, we saw the first Liberal flip-flop. They criticized the Mulroney government, saying it had not offered enough. "We want an apology in the Parliament, not in a banquet hall," said then Liberal MP Sergio Marchi. Marchi also intervened in Ottawa by asking the Conservative government to deal "urgently and efficiently" with this "injustice" and give financial compensation, as it had in the case of Japanese Canadians.

There was another flip-flop when the Liberals were back in power. The new minister of multiculturalism, Sheila Finestone, replying to the demands of the Chinese, Italian, Ukrainian, Jewish and German Canadian communities, said on Dec. 14, 1994, that "we wish we could rewrite history. We wish we could relive the past. We cannot ... Therefore, the government will not grant financial compensation for the requests made."

The Liberals maintained this position all the time that they were in government. In 1997, they said "the issue is closed." 17 December 1990 After years of inaction, recent weeks have seen a marked change in the government's attitude towards righting historical wrongs. Speaking in Toronto in November, Prime Minister Mulroney offered an "unqualified" apology to Italian Canadians interned during the Second World War. Two weeks ago Mr. Weiner met with representatives of the Chinese Canadian National Council, which is seeking compensation for $23 million in "head taxes" paid by Chinese immigrants to Canada in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. And on November 13 the prime minister met in Edmonton with UCC president Dmytro Cipywnyk and other members of the Ukrainian community.

Reports of what was agreed upon at the meeting conflict. UCC officials claim that the prime minister pledged support in principle for a Ukrainian cultural endowment fund; Mr. Mulroney said later that compensation was not discussed. But, at the very least, the government appears prepared to acknowledge that a wrong was done, not only in the case of the Ukrainians, but to other groups as well. "There's two schools of thought," said Mr. Mulroney. "You ignore these things and say they never happened because if you acknowledge one then you have to deal with another. Or you deal with them in the belief that a strong nation is capable of looking at its past and resolving injustices when they occur, and that's what we're in the process of doing."

To say there are "two schools of thought" on the issue of acknowledgement and redress for Ukrainian Canadians and others is something of an understatement. By all accounts, Mr. Mulroney's government is deeply divided on the issue. "This whole redress thing is most unpopular in the caucus," says Douglas Fisher, a columnist for the Toronto Sun newspaper group and a former New Democratic Party MP. "They blame it on the fact that the PM is a small-l liberal and is trying to win the ethnic vote." Among those opposed to compensation for Ukrainian Canadians is Don Blenkarn, Tory MP for Mississauga South. "An acknowledgement would be one thing," says Mr. Blenkarn. "But to tie a dollar figure to it - no bloody way. Claims that go back to the Dark Ages are just unacceptable."

Where were the Liberals and their passion to redress the loss of respect, careers, property? Why did they wait until the dying days of Paul Martin's government to raise this issue?

Is this another highly divisive debate that will be used to create wedges in our parliament?

Donolo knows that in order to get the NDP vote, the Liberals have to polarize the electorate by demonizing the right, portraying the Liberal party as the only barrier against the "right-wing ideologues." That's why they talk about Afghanistan and not the economy, and about Rahim Jaffer and not about their plan to eliminate the deficit and create jobs. When the right is demonized, it's always the NDP that pays the price. The problem the Liberals is that they struggle to define their core principles beyond broad, well-meaning aspirations. They favour peace, fairness, equality,  social justice and protection of human rights. So who doesn't? Hands up, everyone who's against social justice. The problem is in developing policies that promote and defend those beliefs and are identifiable as uniquely Liberal. To do that, you have to know what Liberalism stands for. Liberal senators blasted by Tories, NDP for blocking crime bill

NDP Leader Jack Layton also took aim at the senators, criticizing them for not raising concerns about the legislation earlier.
"Unelected senators shouldn't be standing in the way of the unanimous will of the House when it comes to important laws," Layton said. "This is another example why we shouldn't have unelected law makers in this country and that the Senate should be abolished."
Nicholson also criticized Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff for allowing the senators to change the legislation. The justice minister said there's a consensus among Canadians for more laws cracking down on crime, but that the senators are delaying those changes by proposing amendments.

The latest poll was conducted between Sept. 30 and Oct. 6. The polling period included the Oct. 1 vote on the Liberals' motion of no-confidence in the minority Tory government — a motion the Conservatives defeated as the NDP decided to abstain. The NDP has vowed to keep the government in power to ensure passage of legislation extending employment insurance benefits.


In recent weeks, the Liberals have launched an increasingly desperate-seeming series of cheap-shot attacks

on Stephen Harper’s government. For the most part, these stunts have hurt no one except the Liberals themselves. But the sniping in regard to the case of Suaad Hagi Mohamud falls into another category: By seeking to undermine civil servants who are protecting Canada from illegal immigration and overseas threats, Liberal smears could make this country a more dangerous place.

The Conservatives are benefitting most from the Liberal slide in Quebec, rising eight points since June to obtain 21% support. The Bloc Québécois leads at 33%, while the NDP has just 13% support. The poll is considered accurate to within three percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

Ignatieff to talk tax hikes, cost-cutting to tame deficit

Michael Ignatieff is preparing to embark on a politically risky "adult conversation" with Canadians about the painful measures necessary to eliminate the country's ballooning deficit - including the possibility of tax hikes.
Senior party insiders told The Canadian Press that the Liberal leader is about to launch a blunt discussion of the realistic options available for staunching the flow of red ink.

That includes tax increases, major spending cuts, remaining mired in deficit for years longer than anticipated, or some combination of the three.

Ignatieff won't disclose his own prescription for taming the deficit until the brink of an election, which now seems unlikely this year.

The insiders told The Canadian Press that Ignatieff wouldn't disclose his own prescription for taming the deficit until the brink of an election.

In a statement, Ignatieff said "I've been clear, tax increases are not part of my plan."

The Liberal leader added "our economy is fragile. It's bad policy to add to the burden of middle and low-income households or small businesses" by raising taxes.
